In the article, it clearly states that Bruiser is a french movie dirceted by Gegorge A. Romero, but why french?

It's not filmed in France, no actor is of french origin, it's not about anything French at all, and not even the director is French.

Why is it then classified as so?

But, in school, the best oral report I ever gave was on Mr. I posted that review the day prior to Romero's death and it's just weird to me to be writing this review right now, knowing that one of my favorite horror filmmakers has passed away.

Romero, in a way, helped me overcome that fear of speaking in public because I knew his career so damn well. You see, the thing about George, and why I believe he still remains influential, is the fact that he was one of the first people in horror to look at the genre as something more than shock entertainment.

His films explored themes relevant to the society of his time. He will forever be known to the mainstream horror audience as being the grandfather of the zombie genre, which has grown in popularity exponentially, he will be forever valued for legitimizing the horror genre in the eyes of naysayers by exploring themes that many would never have expected to associate with the genre.

This is why I decided to watch one of his movies tonight, in honor of the man. I didn't wanna watch any 'Of the Dead' movies simply because that is what he is most known for.

So that, obviously, limited my choices. If either of these services had Creepshow, I would have watched that again, I fucking love Creepshow.

I, eventually, decided on this one only three movies were available, I believe. I honestly wish I could have picked one of his better movies to pay tribute to the man, cause this movie was By this point of Romero's career, while he's still influential, he has seen better days in terms of commercial and, maybe, even creative success.

Really, at this point, Romero doesn't really need to get up to work if he doesn't want to, he's got nothing left to prove. But, for some reason, he decided that he needed to make this film.

And it didn't make a dent in the slightest. Though, to be fair, horror at this time wasn't exactly in the best of spots, so I don't think this film with its limited budget and slight story could have made much of an impact anyway.

I'd say that this is a decent movie, at best. That might be generous to some, but there are some things that I legitimately like about the film.

For example, it has a darkly comedic tone, which I wasn't expecting. Plus Peter Stormare was entertaining in his role.

The film has some interesting ideas about a man that is simply stepped on by everyone around him. This mask gives him the confidence to stand up to the people he feels have wronged him.

Of course, this sticking up for himself manifests itself through murder, but what can you do?

I also like the idea that they play with at least for a bit in that, maybe, the effects of this mask are psychological. It is teased that Henry's mask has attached itself to his face and he cannot remove it.

But, again, psychologically speaking, this mask gave Henry the courage to stand up to himself.

If he removes the mask, he might lose that courage. Jason Flemyng is very good in his role. He doesn't give an award-winning performance, but he's more than solid here.

The problem I have with the film is that it just has a cheap look and feel to it. Again, I know I've said that the budget doesn't matter as long as a film is good, but this just screams direct-to-video and the quality of some scenes is really weak.

Like, for example, the whole scene at the costume party at this underground club was so fucking hokey. It's completely in contrast to the rest of the film.

Some of the dialogue was cringe-worthy and the audio was just weird. It's just a really bad chunk of the film.

Bad enough that it ended up downgrading this from 2. How was the gore? Let's just say forgettable and, to me, there's actually very little, if any, of it.

I think the limited budget put the kibosh on having a lot of gore. And that might not have been Romero's goal anyway, maybe Romero's goal was to tell a story.

If that was his goal, then his did an OK job, at best. The story of a man who's pushed too far has been told many times before and Romero brings nothing new to the table.

Review by Mike Thorn. Interesting but strangely uninvolving, George A. Romero's "Bruiser" takes an intriguing concept and does little intriguing with it.

A horror film whose potential goes untapped, "Bruiser" is watchable but rarely satisfying. The plot focuses on a by-the-book man who has violent fantasies of the life he would be better off living.

After he finds his identity hidden by a mask that he created, his fantasies become reality as he tracks down those who have wronged him throughout his life.

It is a compelling set up, but the set up does not lead anywhere gripping. Some early bursts of violence give way to a run-of-the-mill revenge thriller that lacks major thrills.

Those days when the boss could get away with being an arse n grabbing yours. Thankfully that shit is over. You bottle that up, keep swallowing peoples shit, you will get ill.

Smash, crash, bash, you've got to get it out and not just imaginary - I really liked his imagination btw.

When he wakes up with that face oh honey this is the ultimate. I felt his panic immediately. Ah but the edge here is that blank face can do what it likes There are two options here- either Bruiser is Romero's takedown of the "man up" revenge story where a meek protagonist learns to be violent Knowing Romero's history, these feels draped in at least one thick blanket of irony, but the fact that it's easily mistakable for sincerity and absolutely coated in late's style makes it a confusing watch, to say the least.

But someone's head gets exploded via laser, Peter Stormare delivers the most cocaine performance of the 's, and it's actually rather visually striking.

A tonal nightmare, and more often than not kinda forgettable despite the high concept, but there's definitely something there.

A man starts to realize that lettin everyone step on him has gotten him absolutely nowhere. His love life has been made mockery of and he's had thousands of dollars stolen from him by close friends.

He decides to put his life on hold to try and murder those that have hurt him the most. My favorite two scenes in this movie are the two radio calls.

I love how the movie used those radio calls to symbolize the stages of Henry's life. All in all, this is a revenge movie with somethin to say.

It's like, like you should have never bothered. Romero film: both films literally end on a completely outdated cover of A-Ha's seminal hit Take On Me.

BASEketBall's version actually fits into the fun nature of the film, whilst Romero shoves it into the end of a depressing slasher thriller film.

Actually, another massive difference between the two films that both use covers of that same '80's pop superhit is that the band Reel Big Fish that performs the cover on the soundtrack of BASEketBall is in the actual film.

Now Bruiser features the cult horror band the Misfits, do the band that is in the film…. George A Romero, when he wasn't making zombie movies, had a specialty in weird oddities that didn't really fit existing categorizations within their genres - how many killer helper monkey movies are there?

Motorcycle Renaissance faire jousting troupe movies? This is one of those, an unclassifiable art-horror parable about a guy who gets a creepy white plastic mask inexplicably grafted to his face, which causes all of his bottled up murderous impulses to explode out of control.

I don't know if it's supposed to be a story about a guy learning to stand up for himself or a parody of ineffectual protagonists in stories about guys learning to stand up for themselves leaning towards the latter , but even in its messiness I wish there were a lot more unexplainable, bizarre horror movies with wild premises like this out there.

Henry Creedlow isn't so much a bruiser as a loser. Not only is he working for the world's most obnoxious man, fashion mag boss Milos Peter Stormare, having a ball , but his wife's having an affair with him, he's failing to start an affair with Milos's own wife, and he generally feels walked all over.

So he has fantasies about killing people. But they are only fantasies And that's when the film started to lose me a bit.

I was really enjoying the fantasy kills especially one involving a train , but when Henry starts to murder people for real, it becomes rather less fun.

There's a clear undercurrent…. The mask is the only thing going for the movie, as it has that Michael Myers uncanny valley, blank template thing that lets the viewer imprint their own fears onto it.

Until, of course, the character paints it up like something out of the Crow or a Rob Zombie movie and it loses all its effect.

Daily Horror Scavenger Hunt 1 — July boxd. Day Today is the one year anniversary of the world losing George Romero.

Watch or rewatch any movie he has directed. There are a lot of things I love about this movie. I love the concept.

I love Peter Stormare as the ultra sleazy Russian rich dude. I love the weird party at the end.

I love a lot of the music. I love Tom Atkins. I even loved the main dude for most of the run time. I'm just not crazy that the movie feels really incomplete and they just ran out of ideas on how to finish up the movie.

They have the concept and the start of the execution but then it kind of fizzles. Realizing that his life has crumbled around him, a man awakes one day to find that a faceless mask has become his actual face and begins a rampage of terror against those that have wronged him as the killing spree attracts the attention of a police officer anxious to stop him.

This here wasn't all that bad of an effort. One of the finer points of this one is the fact that there's some rather nice work done here to setup the eventual rampage that comes later on.
